Do Sensational Ads Sell Products?
Of late there seem to be a plethora of ads which push the envelope. Most of us have seen them on TV or via Face Book or even while trawling YouTube in the early hours of the morning.

These ads attempt to make us look afresh at sexual choices, victims of ill-health, caste / religious politics and much more. But are they successful in selling the brands they are trying to peddle?

As a business person, I look out for creative communication that romances my brand and gets people to buy my offering. Sure, I wanted to create excitement and perhaps even get an award or two, but the bottom line is the bottom line.

Today I see a deluge of ads (across multiple media) trying to make a bigger difference in people’s lives. Hopefully they are succeeding in initiating social change. But are they effective in selling products? The ads are great – and touch my heart effortlessly. However, the brand’s role is unclear. So I often remember the ad but forget the brand.

In my opinion, sensational ads, unless well crafted – are great pieces of creative communication but not necessarily effective selling tools. It’s very difficult to change brand perception

    So true, Ms. Dutta. Your take on sensational ads rings a bell. I tend to remember sensational ads, but I forget what the product was.
